WEB DESIGN · BURY

Your Bury business, clearly online.

Web design for Bury businesses, from a local web designer in Heywood

I’m James Gonzo, and I run Collective Digital Media from Heywood, the next town along from Bury. The East Lancashire Railway even runs between the two. When a Bury business needs a website, I’m a local tech guy you can ring, not an agency you have to chase.

I build websites for small, owner-run businesses: market traders, shops, tradespeople, cafes, clinics, clubs and people starting up. I’ll also help with the techy bits around it, like business email and getting your details right on Google. You deal with me directly. All web design · See my projects.

Where I’m based,
and where I work.

I’m not based in Bury. I’m based in Heywood, which is in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, while Bury has its own borough and its own council. I work with businesses in Bury, Heywood, Rochdale and Middleton, and I’m clear about that so you know who you’re dealing with.

What a Bury
website needs to do.

Bury is a market town, and the borough around it is made up of several towns: Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Whitefield and Prestwich. A Bury business often serves more than just the town centre, so a good site is built around that.

  • Visitors check before they travel. Bury Market is described as a destination for people from all over Greater Manchester and beyond. If you trade in or near the town centre, someone planning a trip will want to know what you sell, where you are and when you’re open before they set off. Put those answers at the top of your site, not buried on a page three clicks deep.
  • Name the towns you serve. If you’re a trader who visits customers, say plainly that you cover Bury, Ramsbottom, Radcliffe, Whitefield and wherever else is true. A customer in Tottington should not have to guess.
  • Make contact easy. A phone number you can tap, and a short enquiry form that asks only for what you need.
  • Keep it true. Opening hours, prices you’re happy to publish, and photos of your real work or shop. People can tell.
  • Work on a phone. Most people will see your site on a small screen first, so I design for that from the start.

Shop front, home visits,
or both?.

How you describe your business online depends on how you work. Google’s guidance for Business Profiles splits it three ways:

  • A shop front where customers visit you.
  • A service-area business, which visits or delivers to customers and doesn’t serve them at its own address. Google says if you don’t serve customers at your business address, you should remove the address from your profile.
  • A hybrid, which does both.

Google lets a service-area business list the cities, postcodes or areas it serves, up to 20 of them. Your website should say the same thing, in plain words, as your Google profile. I can help you get both right. If you want the step by step, read how to set up a Google Business Profile for a trade business.

What I
build.

Depending on what you need, we can work together on:

  • The page plan. Which pages you need, and what each one should answer.
  • A responsive design built around your own words, photos and services, designed to work on phones and desktops.
  • Clear service information and contact routes, so a customer ready to enquire can do it in a moment.
  • The practical details to publish the site, including your domain.
  • Business email to match. A new site is a good time to move from a Gmail or Hotmail address to one with your business name, set up with Google Workspace.

The exact deliverables are agreed before the build starts, and a project only begins once scope, price, timings and payment terms are agreed in writing.

Your website
and the law.

  • Limited company? GOV.UK says your website must show the company’s registered number, its registered office address, where it is registered (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland), and that it is a limited company.
  • Contact form? The ICO says that when you collect personal details, you must tell people who you are, why you’re using their details, your lawful basis, how long you’ll keep them and what their rights are.

I’m a web designer, not a solicitor. For anything specific to you, check GOV.UK, the ICO or your own adviser.

How a project
goes.

  • 1. A free 30 minute call. Tell me about your business and what you want people to do on your site.
  • 2. A written scope and price. You know what you’re getting and what it costs before any work starts.
  • 3. Design and build. I plan the pages, shape the service copy around your input, and build the site.
  • 4. Review and publish. You check it on your phone and your computer, then it goes live.

What to have ready. You don’t need everything figured out. A logo and any brand colours, the services or products you want to feature, existing text and photos, and your domain details if you have them are enough to start.

See what
I’ve built.

I’ve built three live sites: this one, The Dog Geezer and JG Fitness. They are my own businesses, not client results, so you can look at the design and judge it yourself. Browse them on the projects page.

What it
costs.

The price depends on how many pages you need, and it’s agreed in writing before any work starts. See the current starting prices on the web design page, or ask me on a call.

Questions
Bury businesses ask.

Are you based in Bury? No. I’m based in Heywood, one town over, and I work with businesses in Bury, Heywood, Rochdale and Middleton.

Do you work with market traders and small shops? Yes, owner-run businesses are who I build for. The site’s job is to tell people what you sell, where you are and how to reach you.

Do I have to meet in person? No. Most of it can be done by phone and email.

How much does a website cost? It depends on the size of the site. The price is agreed before any work starts, and you can see the starting prices on the web design page.

Will it work on mobile phones? Yes. Phone screens are part of the design from the start.

Can you set up business email too? Yes. I can set up email with your business name using Google Workspace, connect your domain and get it working on your phone and computer.

Can I see websites you’ve built? Yes. Three live sites are on my projects page. They are my own businesses.

Stuck on something techy first? Send me one techy thing that’s bugging you and I’ll sort it free. Tell me what it is.

Something in mind?
Let’s build on it.
