Google Business Profile checklist for UK trades

A free, plain-English checklist to set up your Google Business Profile properly, then keep it right with a 15 minute monthly routine.

I’m James Gonzo, and I run Collective Digital Media from Heywood. I help local businesses with the techy side of things, and Google Business Profile is one of the most common ones. This checklist is the one I’d give a mate who’s a plumber, a cleaner or a sparky and wants to be on the map without messing about.

How to use
this checklist.

Tick the boxes as you go. Your ticks are saved in your own browser and go nowhere else. Want it on paper? Use the print button.

The rules on this page come from Google’s own help pages and the CMA’s fake reviews guidance (checked 30 October 2026), and the sources are listed at the bottom. The tips around them, like the monthly routine and the review message, are my own. Google can change its rules, so check its help pages if something looks different on your screen.

Your 15 minute
monthly routine.

Put a reminder in your phone for the first of the month. Then tick these off:

Things
to avoid.

  • Putting keywords, towns or services in your business name.
  • Making a second profile for the same business, or using a virtual office address.
  • Offering anything for a review, or writing your own.
  • Showing your home address when customers don’t come to you.
  • Sharing your verification code, or paying anyone who rings claiming to be Google.

Questions
trades ask.

Is Google Business Profile free? Yes. Google says you can add or claim your Business Profile at no charge.

Do I have to show my home address? No. If customers don’t visit you at your address, Google says to remove it from your profile and use a service area instead.

How many towns can I add? Up to 20 service areas, by city, town or postcode, within about two hours’ driving time of your base.

How long does verification take? Google says reviews take up to five working days, and a postcard code usually arrives within 14 days.

Can I ask customers for reviews? Yes, and you should. Send them your Google review link or QR code. You can’t offer them anything in return.

Is Google My Business the same thing? Yes. Google renamed it Google Business Profile, and many people still use the old name.

How often should I update my profile? There’s no set schedule from Google. I suggest a quick check once a month, using the routine above.

Want

If you get stuck at verification, or you’d rather someone else did the setting up, get in touch. I’m the local tech guy in Heywood, not an agency. Send me one techy thing that’s bugging you and I’ll sort it free: one thing, up to 30 minutes, done remotely, nothing to buy. Or book a free 30 minute call.
